My super slow HO/Renix Cherokee build
« on: July 23, 2011, 11:22:21 PM »
This is a build that will prob. take me a long time. I have had this 89 cherokee in my garage for almost a year. The jeep cought on fire under the hood after being stolen. We bought it from a friend for $200. The trans was supposed to have been rebuilt. Well, I got the head off and cleaned up a lot of the melted crap from the engine bay. Today I got some more time to mess with it. I removed the alt., starter, water pump and almost all the oil pan bolts. took the trac bar loose and the steering from the pitman arm. I am trying to decide if I want to rebuild the motor with it in its place or pull the block to rebuild and install the HO head.

Just the engine bay with a lot removed.

The nasty inside where the water pump goes.

Today I pulled the Crank Pulley, timing chain, Cam and Lifters. I had a video of the Chain, but for some reason it will not play. Guess I'll just replace it. I pulled the motor to this point might as well replace it all. Almost just a bare block sitting there. Should I replace the Freeze Plugs?

Look as the rubber coming out of the Crank Pulley. Guess I need that new too.

Ok so I did a quick hone job to one cylinder to see what was up. There is lip at the top and I was wondering if maybe some was carbon build up. Now, I did not want to pull the block and get it bored but let me know what you think. There is still a lip. Its not hugh but it is there.

man look at the camera phone picture.

I don't think you would have any problems not boring the walls out. I would deff replace the freeze plugs while you are that far though, to cheap not to replace them. To get the block bored it wouldn't be to much but then you would have to get oversized pistons.

Do you have a micrometer? I would measure to see how much of a difference there is. Also how deep it goes. It don't look like it would get anywhere near where the piston rings are so sealing shouldn't be a problem.

With all the rust where the water pump goes I might take the block to a shop and have them clean it and ask them to check the bore, most shops will do it anyways to make sure the block is good to go.

Odds are the project will no longer continue. I do not really have the money as my wife lost her job last week. I will be scraping the body and holding the money until she gets a new job. Then I will put some more money to it and buy me a newer jeep to build as a daily and us the one I have now as a project for offroad only.
